In a daring move, Ukraine drone attack on Mosscow on Wednesday. Russian air defenses intercepted several of the drones, but some managed to breach the city’s defenses.
According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, several drones were intercepted and destroyed over Podolsk, a city located approximately 38 kilometers south of the Kremlin in the Moscow region.
This is one of the most significant drone attacks on Moscow to date,” Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated in a Telegram post early Wednesday morning.
Ukraine Drone Attack on Moscow :
The attack occurred as Russia continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine, facing stiff resistance from Ukrainian forces. Notably, Russia has struggled to repel Ukrainian troops who breached its western border two weeks ago, marking the largest invasion of Russia since World War II.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that preliminary reports indicated no injuries or damage following the drone attacks. In recent months, Ukraine has frequently launched one or two drones targeting Russia Capital , typically resulting in minimal damage.
However, the attack on Wednesday appeared more significant than the one in May 2023, when at least eight drones were intercepted over the capital. President Vladimir Putin described that incident as an attempt by Kyiv to intimidate and provoke Russia.
Russian officials often do not disclose the full scale of such attacks, usually reporting only the drones that their air defense units successfully destroy. Similarly, both Ukraine and Russia tend to withhold details about the full extent of the damage caused by their attacks, unless there is damage to residential or civilian infrastructure, or civilian casualties.
The Wednesday attack on Moscow was part of a larger Ukrainian drone offensive against Russia. The Russian defense ministry stated that its air defense units also destroyed 23 drones over the Bryansk border region.
According to the Russian defense ministry, six drones were intercepted and destroyed over Belgorod, a region bordering Ukraine. Additionally, three drones were taken down over the Kaluga region, which lies to the northeast of the Moscow region, and two more were neutralized over the conflict-ridden Kursk region.
In the aftermath of the attack on the Bryansk border region in southwestern Russia, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported on Telegram that there were no casualties or damage. The Russian state news agency RIA also reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to the north.
Separately, Vasily Golubev, the governor of the Rostov region in southwestern Russia, announced that air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a missile launched by Ukraine, with no injuries reported. However, the Russian defense ministry did not include the incidents in Tula and Rostov in its official statement listing the destroyed aerial threats.
Reuters was unable to independently confirm these reports. Ukraine’s government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In recent months, Kyiv has intensified its aerial assaults on Russian territory, citing its intention to dismantle critical infrastructure that supports Moscow’s war efforts. Ukraine maintains that these attacks are a direct response to Russia’s ongoing strikes on Ukrainian soil.
