Sabarmati Express train derailed in Kanpur :

Early Saturday morning, 22 coaches of the Sabarmati Express, en route from Varanasi to Ahmedabad (train number 19168), derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh. Officials report that the derailment occurred when the train’s engine struck an unidentified object on the tracks. At this time, there are no immediate reports of injuries. The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that the Intelligence Bureau will conduct a detailed investigation to uncover the causes behind the incident. Emergency response teams are on-site, working to assess the situation and ensure passenger safety. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Following the derailment of the Sabarmati Express near Kanpur, Indian Railways has swiftly responded by deploying buses to the accident site. These buses are being utilized to transport stranded passengers to Kanpur. To ensure minimal disruption to travel plans, the railway authorities have also made necessary arrangements for passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad.

22 Coaches of Sabarmati Express Derail; No Injuries Reported :

Rakesh Verma, ADM City Kanpur, informed ANI that 22 coaches of the Sabarmati Express have derailed, but fortunately, there are no reported injuries. The loco pilot described the incident, stating that a boulder struck the front portion of the engine, causing significant damage. In response to the derailment, Indian Railways has cancelled seven trains and diverted three others to accommodate the disruption and ensure passenger safety.

Where and when did the Sabarmati Express derail ?

Based on information from the railway’s train enquiry website, the train derailed at 2:29 a.m. on Saturday, around 30 minutes after leaving Kanpur Central station, near Bhimsen.

Earlier on the same track, the Patna-Indore train passed without incident at 1:20 a.m.

What caused the derailment of the Sabarmati Express ?

Preliminary reports indicate that a boulder might have struck the engine, causing significant damage to the cattle guard.

‘A boulder appears to have hit the cattle guard at the front of the engine, which was severely damaged and bent,’ a Railway Board official stated, according to a PTI report.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the engine ‘collided with an object placed on the track, leading to its derailment.’

He further added in a post on X, ‘There are visible impact marks. The evidence is being preserved, and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) along with Uttar Pradesh police are investigating the incident.
